Instructions To Use
In Order To Properly Tune Edges Sharp, It Is Necessary And Common To Have To Perform What Is Known As “Sidewall Planing” To Allow Uninhibited Access For A File Or A Tuning Machine To Precisely Sharpen The Metal Edge. Ski Manufacturer’S Machinery Does A Basic Job And Typically The Sidewall Is Machined At The Same Angle As The Angle Of The Edge. To Properly Sharpen A Ski Edge The Sidewall Or More Specifically The The “Sidewall Bumper” Or “Sidewall Lip” (The Protruding Material Just Above The Metal Edge, Can Be Plastic Sidewall As Well Fiberglass And/Or Aluminum Needs To Be Trimmed Away Or Removed. By Removing A Portion Of The Side Lip/Bumper, The File/Tuning Machine Has Unobstructed Access To The Metal Edge…See Fig#2. If Sidewall Planning Is Done You Are Able To Get The Most Precise Edge Angle And Sharpness. If Sidewall Trimming Is Not Performed The File/Tuning Machine Will Not Be Able To Cut The Metal Part Of The Edge And Simply Tries To Cut The Plastic Sidewall, Which A File Nor A Tuning Machine Can Do And Will Just Burn And Gum Up The File Or Stone. Sidewall Need To Be Cut Away To Have Clean Access To The Metal Edge. The Sidewall Bumper Gives The Ski Edge Strength, So You Want To Remove Only A Small Amount At A Time. Be Carefull Not To Remove Too Much Sidewall In 1 Time, As It Will Make The Edge Strength A Bit More Fragile. Typically Remove Enough To Allow You To Tune 3 Or 4 Times. As You Continue To Tune, The Edge Will Start To Match The Sidewall Again And You Will Need To Perform The Side Planing Again. And So On For The Life Of The Ski.
